Water Extraction vs. Structural Drying: What Happens After a Leak?

Extraction removes accessible water. Drying addresses moisture left inside materials. A completed cleanup may need both stages, depending on what became wet.

The extraction decision

Standing water on floors or in carpet is removed with equipment suitable for the surface and water source. The source must be stopped or further water will return.

The drying decision

A moisture assessment identifies damp wall bases, padding, cabinets or flooring. Air movement and dehumidification may follow, with readings used to monitor progress.

When the water source changes the plan

A clean supply-line loss, rainwater intrusion, and a sewage backup are different situations. Contaminated materials can require more than a normal dry-out.

What to ask on the first call

Describe when the water began, the suspected source, the rooms affected, whether electricity is involved, and whether the flow has stopped.
